We invited school psychologists,  teachers, school principals, superintendents, a school safety specialist, and an education law expert to help us figure out what to do in the wake of a historic inflection point that demands some difficult discussions as soon as possible.

Dr. Angela M. Ward is a public-school administrator with over 20 years of experience. She is focused on creating identity-safe schools and workplaces and strives daily to nurture equity-centered schooling. Follow Dr. Ward http://2wardequity.com/blog/

Phyllis L. Fagell, LCPC is the school counselor at Sheridan School in Washington, D.C. and a therapist at The Chrysalis Group. Phyllis frequently writes columns on counseling, parenting and education for The Washington Post, and she’s the author of Middle School Matters (Hachette, 2019).

Kyle Hamstra teaches fifth-grade math and science at Davis Drive Elementary for fourteen years. crafting learning experiences as a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) specialist. He is a 2016 ASCD Emerging Leader, a member of the Wake Science Core Leadership Team, and a member of the North Carolina Digital Leaders Coaching Network.

Jon Harper is an assistant principal at Sandy Hill Elementary School in Cambridge, Maryland where he actually attended school himself. Previously, he was a math coach and taught first through fifth grades. He is the author of My Bad: 24 Educators Who Messed Up Fessed Up and Grew! He hosts #MyBad Radio and Teachers’ Aid.

Tom Hutton is the Interim Executive Director of the Education Law Association’s (ELA). Tom is a former school attorney who served in-house with the National School Boards Association and its Council of School Attorneys and later in private practice in Seattle. He had been a co-founder as a law student of Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School, a law-themed high school in the District of Columbia.

Dr. Amy Klinger is nationally recognized as an expert in school safety and crisis management. She delivers training and lectures to audiences throughout the United States and abroad. She has more than 28 years of experience as an educator and administrator. She is an associate professor of Educational Administration at Ashland University and is the co-founder and Director of Programs at The Educators’ School Safety Network.

Shawn Thomas is in her 20th year of teaching in the largest county in Georgia. She has taught Kindergarten, Second and Third Grade, and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) K-5. Nancy Blair is a middle school principal in Georgia. She previously served as a school improvement consultant.

Dr. Rocio del Castillo began her career as a school psychologist in Peru and has dedicated her professional career to being an advocate for educational equity and social justice. She currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for Special Services in Huntley Community School District 158 and as an adjunct professor.
